History and Background​
Chief Jahkai Akoni TÈŸatÈŸáÅ‹ka Íyotake Sikani Shaktxiuma Maipuri, born in 1957, is a distinguished First Nations leader with a rich ancestral heritage. He is the great-grandson of a rancher from the southern United States on his father’s side and has Native American lineage, with great-grandparents of 100% Indian blood. His great-grandfather was a skilled bridge builder and craftsman who contributed to constructing houses and buildings across the country, embodying the role of a “Hiram” in his family.
As the Chief of his nation, he governs native lands spanning six states and champions self-determination and sovereignty for his people. He is also recognized as an indigenous tribal leader by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and serves as President of Harvest Christian Fellowship, emphasizing repatriation and cultural preservation. As a leader within the Sikani Shaktxiuma Maipuri Nation, Chief Jahkai Akoni spearheaded initiatives to establish and develop tribal law enforcement agencies, including the Sikani Marshals Services and related departments such as the Sikani Sheriff Department and Law Enforcement Academy at Harvest Christian University. His efforts focus on protecting tribal sovereignty, enhancing public safety, and fostering collaboration with federal agencies while maintaining the inherent autonomy of tribes.
Under his leadership, the Sikani Nation has implemented programs addressing crime prevention, victim support, juvenile justice reform, and violence reduction. He has also prioritized interagency coordination, behavioral health resources, and recruitment of well-trained tribal public safety officials. These initiatives reflect his commitment to strengthening governance and ensuring justice within tribal lands.

The Sikani Nation has formed several key partnerships to enhance its law enforcement capabilities:
• Government-to-Government Collaboration with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ): Through the Tribal Law and Order Act of 2010, the Sikani Nation has gained access to law enforcement databases, expanded funding, and training opportunities. This collaboration strengthens public safety on tribal lands and supports tribal sovereignty.
National Public Safety Partnership (PSP): The Sikani Nation benefits from DOJ programs like PSP, which provide tailored training, technical assistance, and resources to address violent crime challenges. These partnerships promote interagency coordination and evidence-based strategies for enhancing public safety.
• Community-Oriented Policing Initiatives: The Sikani Nation actively engages in community policing programs to prevent crime, resolve conflicts, and improve relations between law enforcement and tribal communities.
